Water Softener Installation & Service
Get My Quote
Hard water is coating your home in calcium and magnesium every time you run the tap. You see it in crusty faucets, spotty dishes, and stiff laundry, while scale builds inside your water heater. KO HVAC installs and services water softeners across Kingston, PA, to stop that buildup at the source.
Your water source changes the picture, too. Homes on private wells, common in the Back Mountain and around Mountain Top, often carry more minerals than city water. We check your water first, then size the softener to what's coming out of your tap.

2 tanks
A resin tank that pulls minerals out of the water and a brine tank that recharges it with salt.
Once a month
How often to check the salt level in the brine tank so the softener never runs dry.
10 to 15 years
The typical life of a well-kept softener, with the resin often replaceable along the way.

Hard water works quietly, so most people notice the damage before the cause. The first four signs point to hard water that a new softener would fix. The last two mean the softener you already have needs service.
A chalky white or tan buildup forms around faucets, drains, and showerheads. That's calcium and magnesium left behind as the water dries. Scrubbing only clears it for a week, while a softener stops it from forming.
Glasses come out of the dishwasher cloudy or spotted, even with rinse aid. Hard water minerals dry onto every surface they touch. Softened water rinses clean, so dishes come out clear.
Shampoo, dish soap, and detergent barely foam, so you keep using more. Minerals react with soap and turn it into scum instead of suds. With soft water, a smaller amount does the same job.
The water heating bill climbs even though your habits haven't changed. Scale coats the inside of the tank or tankless unit, so it burns more energy for each gallon. Softening the water protects the heater and helps it keep its efficiency.
Crust and spots return, even though you already have a softener. The unit may be out of salt, set for the wrong hardness, or running on tired resin. A service visit resets it and checks the parts that wear out.
The salt in the brine tank hasn't dropped in weeks. Hardened salt may be stuck above the water, or the part that recharges the softener has quit. Either way, the softener has stopped softening.

A whole-home water softener typically runs about $1,200 to $3,800 installed. Your water's hardness, your household's size, and the type of system set most of the price. Plumbing changes, like a bypass valve or drain line, shape the rest.
KO HVAC checks your water and the install space first, so the softener fits what comes out of your tap. You then get a written quote to approve before any work starts. Smaller jobs can qualify for 0% financing for 12 months, with approved credit.

Both cut down on scale, but only one removes the minerals. A salt-based softener pulls them out of the water, while a conditioner changes them so they stick less. We'll recommend the one that fits your water, and we'll tell you if you need neither.
| Salt-based softener | Salt-free conditioner | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium in a resin tank | Changes the minerals so they're less likely to stick |
| Removes minerals? | Yes | No |
| Spots and crust | Stops them | Reduces them |
| Upkeep | Salt added monthly, plus periodic service | Little to none |
| Best for | Hard city water and most well water | Moderately hard water, or homes avoiding salt |
| Water heater protection | Strongest | Helpful |

Hardness, household size, and daily water use decide how big a softener should be. Too small, and it runs out of capacity; too big, and it wastes salt. We measure first, so the unit fits.
Hard water shortens a water heater's life, and we repair and install those too. When we put in a softener, we can check the heater on the same trip. That way, both pieces work together.
We service the softeners we install and many we didn't. That covers salt bridges, control valve settings, and worn parts. Before we leave, you'll know how to check the salt and when to call.
Here's how an installation or service visit runs, from the first call to the first softened glass.
Step 1
Book a Visit
Call or book online, and describe the spots, crust, or soap trouble. Let us know whether you're on city water or a private well.
Step 2
We Check the Water and Space
A technician tests your water hardness, looks at where the softener would go, and asks about daily water use. On service calls, we inspect the existing unit.
Step 3
Your Quote, Your Call
You get a written quote with the size, type, and price, or a flat-rate repair price. Nothing starts until you say yes.
Step 4
Installed, Set, and Explained
We install the softener with a bypass valve, set it for your water, and run a regeneration cycle. Then we show you how to add salt and check the settings.

A person answers our line 24 hours a day. From 8 to 5, the office books your visit at the first open slot. After hours, maintenance plan members can get emergency repairs at an after-hours rate.
Turn the bypass valve on the softener's head so water flows around it. You'll keep running water while the unit waits for service.
If water is leaking from the unit, unplug the control head and switch to bypass. Wipe up the water to keep it away from nearby outlets.

The price depends on your water's hardness, your household's size, and the type of softener. Plumbing changes, like adding a bypass or drain line, also play a part. KO HVAC gives a written quote after checking your water and the install space.
If you see white crust on fixtures, spotty dishes, or soap that won't lather, you likely have hard water. A quick hardness check confirms it. If your water tests soft, we'll tell you a softener isn't needed.
Check the brine tank about once a month, and keep it at least a quarter full. Households with harder water or more people go through salt faster. Break up any hard crust you find on top.
Yes. Softened water keeps scale from building up inside the tank or tankless unit, so the heater holds its efficiency. It can also help the heater last longer. That's one reason we check both when we visit.
Yes, for hardness. Well water in the Back Mountain and around Mountain Top can also carry iron, which some softeners handle in small amounts. We check what's in your water before recommending a system.
Most last about 10 to 15 years, depending on water hardness and upkeep. The resin inside wears out over time and can often be replaced. Regular salt and a yearly check help it reach the long end of that range.
A softener removes calcium and magnesium using salt. A conditioner changes those minerals so they're less likely to form scale, without removing them. Softeners give the strongest protection against spots and buildup.
